The One Automation That Changed Everything: Adaptive Lighting
Of all the automations I have built, adaptive lighting delivers the most noticeable quality-of-life improvement. It adjusts color temperature and brightness throughout the day based on natural light cycles. After six months, going back to static white lighting feels physically uncomfortable.
How It Works
At sunrise, lights are cool white (5000K) and bright. As the day progresses, color temperature slowly shifts warmer. By sunset, all lights are at 2700K. After 9 PM, they drop to 2200K at 40% brightness. The transition is so gradual you never notice it happening – but your circadian rhythm does.
The Setup
I use the Adaptive Lighting integration in Home Assistant. It controls 23 Zigbee bulbs (IKEA Tradfri and Innr) throughout the house. Configuration took 20 minutes. The integration calculates sun position automatically based on your location – no manual scheduling needed.
Measurable Results
My sleep tracker (Withings) shows average sleep onset decreased by 14 minutes after implementing adaptive lighting. Morning alertness scores improved by 12%. These are not placebo effects – the data is consistent over six months. The bulbs paid for themselves in better sleep alone, without counting the energy savings from reduced brightness in the evening.
