Automating Window Blinds: The Overlooked Energy Saver

Automated blinds are not a luxury – they are one of the most effective passive energy management tools available. My motorized blinds reduced summer cooling costs by 18% and winter heating costs by 7%. Here is the logic that makes them work.

The Energy Case

Windows are the weakest point in any building envelope. In summer, south-facing windows admit solar heat that your AC must remove. In winter, uncovered windows radiate heat outward. Automated blinds that react to sun position and temperature solve both problems without any effort from you.

My Automation Logic

Summer mode: When outdoor temperature exceeds 75F AND the sun azimuth faces a window, close blinds on that side to 80%. When indoor temperature drops below setpoint, open all blinds. Winter mode: When the sun shines on a window AND outdoor temp is below 50F, open blinds fully to capture solar heat gain. After sunset, close all blinds to reduce radiant heat loss.

Hardware Choice

I use IKEA Fyrtur blinds – $130 each with built-in Zigbee. They integrate directly with Home Assistant through the Zigbee coordinator. Battery lasts 6+ months with daily open/close cycles. For a house with 8 automated windows, total cost was $1,040. Annual energy savings: approximately $280. Payback: 3.7 years, plus the daily convenience of never touching a blind again.
